2nd Annual Ladies Only Penning – June 2007
In our first five years of riding and fund raising the SpokesSisters raised over $100,000.00 for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, Prairies/NWT Chapter. In 2007 we decided to do something a little different. We set our fundraising sights on the Calgary Health Trust and the new Richmond Road Diagnostic and Treatment Centre that will be opening in 2008. Working with their Breast Health Clinic we decided to lend our support towards something tangible.

Our fundraising in 2007 will go towards a “Serenity Room”. This is a room where once a surgical procedure or treatment has been performed; a patient can go for some peace and quiet to recover. We are hoping to create a room where there is a quiet serenity in a world that may have become quite frightening.

Our goal of the Penning Event was to raise funds towards the purchase of items that will enhance the surroundings of the Serenity Room -- things like comfortable seating, decorative furnishings, a TV, music, art and lighting. With the support of the women Penners, individual contributions and corporate sponsorship, we were able to make a donation of $47,500 to the Calgary Health Trust.

The generosity and support given to the SpokesSisters efforts to increase awareness and our fundraising activities continues to exceed our expectations. We can never truly express our gratitude to those who donated their time, efforts and monetary contributions.

Presto! Another successful fund raising event. Thanks Linda and John and Friends!

THE CALGARY SPOKES SISTERS TAKE HORSEPOWER TO THE MAX IN 2006
On March 25th the SpokesSisters hosted over 50 women for the first Annual Ladies Only Team Penning Event in Okotoks, Alberta. Proceeds totalling over $27,500 from the event were donated to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, Prairies/NWT chapter.   The generous spirit of individuals and organizations in the Calgary area, in the giving of not only donations but personal time, made for a truly unique and successful event.

It’s not very often that you can find similarities between the horse world and the motorcycle world.  It is because of a mutual love and respect for ‘horsepower’ and a desire to help win the fight against breast cancer that these two worlds magnificently collided.

Team penning is a competitive equestrian sport. Each team is comprised of 3 riders on 3 horses and a herd of 30 numbered cattle at the far end of an arena. The challenge for the riders is to pull 3 numbered cows out of a herd and pen them at an opposing side of the arena is as fast a time as possible.

2005 Annual Cruisin' for a Cure Ride
The SpokesSisters were hopeful that the weatherman’s forecast for inclimate weather during the weekend of our annual ride (September 9th to 11th) would be wrong.  Unfortunately, the forecast held true for cold and wet weather.  Although we made the attempt to ride our bikes, with snow on its way and temperatures dropping to zero, we made the decision it would be far too dangerous to ride our bikes.
Arriving in our vehicles didn't have the same impact as arriving on bikes, but we continued with our goal of raising awareness of, and funds for, breast cancer research.  Our ride started with the traditional stop at the Grace Hospital in Calgary where we presented flowers to the staff and patients.  It was then on to Banff, Alberta, and Invermere, Kimberley and Fernie, BC; with our final stop in Black Diamond, Alberta.  It was gratifying to hear that folks remembered us from previous rides, and continued to provide support through sharing of their stories and making donations.  Thank you to all we met and we’ll see you again next year – hopefully, in the sunshine.

Another successful fund raising event.  Thanks Linda and John and Friends!
